6 Tips For Learning A Foreign Language, A Mini Guide!

Learning a new language is as useful as it is fun, and there is nothing that should keep you from this endeavor. While the prospect is exciting and opens new ways for you, such as communicating with people from different cultures, and finding interesting career options, the journey is nowhere near as easy as you may think. However, you must not lose heart because of the difficulty you face and try whatever you can to successfully learn the new language.

Language learning may seem like a big challenge but is also rewarding. Some people are natural at picking up new information, but for some, it can be tough. If you are also learning a foreign language and finding ways to do it smoothly, have a look below.

6 Tips For Learning A Foreign Language

6 Tips For Learning A Foreign Language

1: Learn Daily

Even if your progress is slow, you must make it consistent. Do not exert yourself with learning sessions that take up hours of your day, rather make it small enough, so you are not exhausted or bored. Small learning sessions on a daily basis are better than long ones with a gap of one or two days. Learn while everything is fresh in your memory and make every session exciting. One hour a day is plenty of time for you to review the previous lesson, and learn the next one. It is not about how much time you have, or how much time you spend, but the quality of it that defines your progress.

2: Learn The Basics

Language learning can be tricky because of its rules regarding grammar and sentence structures. If you do not learn the basic vocabulary and its meaning, you will be left confused. For example, learning when to use por vs. para in Spanish is just as important as learning how to use conjunctions in English. These are the basics that help us understand how to form a sentence, which is a necessary step in language learning. You will not always be learning vocabulary and meanings of words and you will have to ultimately form sentences on your own so you can begin to speak and understand the language.

3: Be Motivated For It

If you hope to learn a new language, you must be passionate and motivated. You will find that anything that you are not excited about will lose your interest. Many language learners make the mistake of learning the language as a chore. Some people do learn a language out of interest, but there are still many who have to learn it because of their academic or professional career, and in the latter case it will not be a surprise if you are bored of the learning process.

If you have to learn a language, make it interesting or engage in a style that holds your interest. Find the reason why you are learning this language, and motivate yourself. Do not consider language learning as something you must do but think about the many advantages you will have after you become fluent in a foreign language.

4: Get Rid Of Distractions

The process of language learning cannot take place when you are distracted. It is something that needs to have your undivided attention for that specific time. It is all about priorities! You must set your priorities straight, and in this case, learning the language should be among the top of your list. During your learning sessions, it would be better to turn off your electronic gadgets, so you are not distracted by other things such as social media.

If you cannot turn off your mobile phone, it would be better to turn off the notifications for those apps. Social media networks like Facebook can take up a lot of time. What is supposed to be a few minutes of scrolling on the home page of Facebook can easily turn into an hour of you looking at different profiles. Trying to see what you are friends are up to will not help you learn anything.

5: Learn In Chunks

Learning the language in chunks instead of learning individual words is much more effective. It would be better to learn the common phrase people use, such as ‘good morning,’ or ‘have a nice day.’ One benefit of this approach is obvious that you will be able to communicate with the natives in some way.

The other advantage is that it would be easier for you to learn these phrases as a whole, instead of learning the words separately and then forming the respective phrases. You will also get the idea of how to use those words in their context. For example, the words ‘have’ and ‘obtain’ have the same meanings, but using ‘obtain’ instead of ‘have’ in the phrase ‘have a nice day’ will not have the same ring to it. In fact, such a phrase will not make any sense.

6: Listen To The Foreign Language

Babies do not learn languages by understanding the rules and meanings of words; they acquire it automatically because our brain is capable of such complex functions. As a child, or an adult, learning the language systematically is important, but if you want to get a grasp of it subconsciously, you should listen to the language itself. Find out songs, movies, or talk shows in the foreign language. Watch them and listen to them.

No one can help you learn the language better than the natives themselves. Listening to the native speakers of the foreign language will show you how the natives actually speak informally/formally, teaching you the pronunciations.

There are plenty of more tips on how you can learn a new language, but these tips are the major ones and will help you a lot on this journey. It is important that you make your language learning as easy as you can. Overburdening yourself or starting by learning the complicated things first will not only make it difficult for you, but it will also make you less enthusiastic.
